WHAT DOES A LUXURY BATHROOM REMODEL INCLUDE?
A bathroom is the smallest room in most homes and often the most complicated one to rebuild. Plumbing, electrical work, ventilation, waterproofing, tile, glass, and cabinetry all meet in a small footprint, and each trade depends on the one before it.
Bathroom remodels generally fall into three groups:
- Guest or hall bath updates. The layout stays in place. New tile, a new vanity, fresh fixtures, and better lighting do most of the work.
- Primary bath renovations. The room comes down to the studs, and the plumbing may move. This is where curbless showers, freestanding tubs, and custom cabinetry usually come in.
- Layout changes. Borrowing space from a closet or bedroom, or moving the toilet into its own compartment, adds framing, plumbing, and design work.
We help you decide early which group fits your goals, because that choice shapes the schedule, the budget, and the permits. Our guide to bathroom remodeling in Lowcountry homes covers more of the early planning questions.
HOW DO YOU PROTECT A BATHROOM FROM COASTAL MOISTURE?
Water is the biggest risk in any bathroom, and our humid climate raises the stakes. Steam that stays in the room settles into drywall, trim, and cabinet boxes. A small leak behind tile can go unnoticed for a long time.
Good bathroom construction starts behind the finishes:
- Waterproofing. A shower needs a waterproof layer behind the tile, because tile and grout alone do not stop water. The pan, the corners, the niches, and every point where a valve or shower head passes through the wall all need careful attention.
- Ventilation. An exhaust fan should be sized to the room and ducted to the outdoors, not into the attic. In our humidity, that one detail helps protect the paint, the ceiling, and the framing above.
- Drainage. Shower floors need a consistent slope to the drain. A curbless shower takes extra planning because the floor itself has to drop.
- Materials. Porcelain tile, natural stone, and solid surface products each behave differently in wet areas. Some stone needs sealing and regular care. We walk through those trade-offs before you choose.
Salt air can also be hard on exposed metal. For homes close to the water, we talk through fixture finishes and hardware before you place an order.
WHICH DESIGN DECISIONS SHOULD COME FIRST?
A bathroom involves many small choices, and the order matters. We start with the layout, then plumbing locations, and then finishes. Changing a tile selection is easy on paper. Moving a drain after the walls are closed is not.
A few questions help us shape the design:
- Do you want a tub, a shower, or both? In some primary baths, a larger shower makes better use of the floor than a tub that rarely gets used.
- Do you need one vanity or two, and how much counter space do you actually use?
- Where will towels, toiletries, and cleaning supplies go? Shower niches and tall cabinets help keep counters clear.
- Do you want a heated floor, a steam shower, or a separate toilet room? Each one needs early planning for power, drains, or framing.
- How long do you plan to stay in the home? While the walls are open, it makes sense to add blocking for future grab bars, even if you do not want them today.
Lighting deserves its own plan. Overhead light alone can cast shadows on your face at the mirror, so we like to pair it with light at the sides of the mirror.
Timing matters too. Custom vanities, stone slabs, and shower glass each have their own lead times. Shower glass, for example, is usually measured after the tile is set, so it arrives late in the project.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING BATHROOM CONSTRUCTION?
The on-site work on a typical bathroom takes four to eight weeks, and it follows a set order. First we protect the path through your home and contain dust. Then the old fixtures, tile, and finishes come out.
With the room open, we can see the condition of the framing, subfloor, pipes, and wiring. Plumbing and electrical rough-in comes next, followed by the inspections your local office requires. Waterproofing and tile follow, then cabinetry, countertops, fixtures, glass, paint, and a final walkthrough.
Several of these steps need drying or curing time, so a bathroom can look quiet on some days even when the schedule is on track. We keep you informed about what is happening and what comes next.
If this is your only working bathroom, tell us at the first visit. We can talk through the sequence and what temporary options make sense for your household.
WHAT AFFECTS THE COST OF A BATHROOM REMODEL?
Every bathroom we build is custom quoted. Two bathrooms of the same size can be very different projects, so we price the actual scope after we see the room. These are the factors that move a quote the most:
- Moving plumbing. Keeping the toilet, shower, and sinks where they are costs less than relocating them. Homes on a slab and raised homes each present different challenges.
- Hidden conditions. Old galvanized pipe, past leaks, or outdated wiring may need attention once the walls are open.
- Structure. A heavy stone floor or large soaking tub may require reinforcement of the floor framing below.
- Finish selections. Tile size and pattern, stone, plumbing trim, and custom cabinetry all affect both material and labor.
- Access. Second-floor bathrooms, elevated homes, and narrow stairs change how materials get in and out.
WHAT SHOULD YOU ASK BEFORE HIRING A BATHROOM REMODELER?
Most of the important work in a bathroom ends up hidden behind tile. Before you sign with any contractor, we suggest asking:
- How will the shower be waterproofed, and who is responsible for that step?
- Who handles permits and inspections for the plumbing and electrical work?
- Who will be my contact from design through the final walkthrough?
- How will dust be contained, and how will my floors be protected?
- What happens if you find a problem behind the walls?
- Is the price fixed, and how are changes handled?

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a bathroom remodel cost in Mt. Pleasant, SC?
Every bathroom remodel in Mt. Pleasant is custom quoted, because the cost depends on the size of the space and the scope of the work. A guest bath refresh with new tile, vanity, and fixtures is a smaller project. A primary suite renovation with a curbless shower, freestanding tub, custom cabinetry, and relocated plumbing takes much more. Citadel Enterprises provides a fixed-price proposal after the design consultation, so you know the full investment before construction begins.
